Farm Camp 2013-2014

September 4, 2013 by campwahoo

We are excited to offer Farm Camp again in 2014. This section of Camp Wahoo is ideal for rising 9th-12th graders who are interested in taking the supplemental sessions a bit further. We combine carpentry, gardening, cooking, and design to engage campers in the natural world and use their hands. Our hope is through teamwork, problem solving, creative thinking, and inspired leadership from the staff, campers will face new and challenging experiences. Our experience is that farm camp is the best summer day a kid could have. Learn, get dirty, play games, know where your food comes from, create, rest. Although farm campers are DAY campers only, they will participate in group games, take swim breaks and rest time, and share lunch and snack with the overnight Wahoos.

Last summer we learned about local food, sources ingredients from the Local Food Hub and the Miller School Gardens and had a cook off competition. The winning team made cabbage wraps and peach cobbler. Ali Wawner got best young chef.

We also took a tour of a nearby grass fed beef, pork, and chicken farm. Highlight of the day was chicken poop roulette. Grand prize was a dozen eggs. It was a tricky (messy) call so we split the dozen, Coach Z and John Carr shared the jackpot.

We did such a good job last year of building raised beds we are in the process of brainstorming what else we can do to improve Miller School. Thanks to all of the campers who continued to care for the garden AFTER camp was over. Weeding in July is something only Tony Z would think up.
